The mechanics of the game are straightforward, well explained in the rulebook and supported by video examples on the website and YouTube, plus a very active online community.
Played my first game at my local gaming group. Great fun and quick to learn. It generated a lot of interest. All the excitement of the real thing without standing or sitting in the stands on a freezing November Saturday!
Perhaps the next version could include a trial jar of Bovril for even more realism?

So as a football coach dad (from sports teacher profession too) and looking at the ‘pandemic’ of footballing youngsters glued to computer games rather than the real thing, I’m thinking how to encourage tactical intelligence in my footballing daughter without further computer gaming, where the requirements are more involved thinking at a steady pace in a format that demands it. We’re sitting there playing Chess one evening with my aim to use it as the best platform id so far come up with so far to achieve this aim and it suddenly dawned on me ‘I wonder if someone has already made a Chess like board game out of football?!’ To my surprise, when then searching for such a thing I stumble upon Counterattack and stare open mouthed at a game already recently made in a format almost exactly like my daydream vision had suggested! Immediately and excitedly ordered it as I could tell from everything about the website info it had been made from a similar keen mind that was a student of the sport and where attention to detail and quality were not to be compromised and I can say having had a few chances to play with my initially reluctant and now intrigued daughter, it is superbly put together and has a very authentic feel to the tactical battle that real football provides without an electronic device in sight! If, like me, you get frustrated when playing Football Manager, FIFA or PES and you think you’ve assembled a top team but the players won’t do what you want them to do, Counter Attack will solve these issues for you. YOU are in charge of how your team lines up and who plays in each position and what style of football you want to play:
– 4-3-3 attacking pass and move with two quick and gifted wingers ? you can play that way!
– 4-4-2 – shell long balls into the channels early doors? you can play that way!
– 5-4-1 – ultra defensive and a lone forward chasing everything? You can play that way!
– ?-?-? – a more chaotic formation with full backs strolling forward into playmaker positions and forwards tackling back? I’ve seen it happen!
Of course your success relies as much on analysing the strengths/weaknesses of your opponents team as well and neutralising them and getting on top.

I have been looking for the very best football/soccer board game ever since I was a child. It is my favorite sport, and I love sports games on the tabletop. Counter Attack was the game I was always looking for. A beautiful game to look at, a simple to learn system with so much depth and strategy, so many new teams and players to add to the game, and a designer that is always looking to make it better make this the absolute perfect football/soccer game. You love to see the players out on the board, the strategies developing in your mind, and the thrill when it comes together and you score. Can’t recommend this enough for anyone who likes football/soccer or tabletop sports games.

A 1v1 tactical battle that is easy to pick up with video and manual. Harder to master with the unpredictability. I’ve played many games and will continue to play more.
Additionally Counterattack allows for customisation that’ll please anyone and everyone. From playing with your favourite team colours to printing off player cards. For example this perfect way to solidify regens from other games such as Football Manager.
