24 players from all over the world competed in the first ever Counter Attack World Cup over the last 5 weeks.
The combination of covid lockdown and Tabletopia – the online board game simulator website – made it possible for us to come together across international borders for this festival of football; this discotheque of dice!
The tournament was arranged in the mould of a real World Cup: 6 groups of 4 teams followed by a straight knock-out phase. Top goalscorers and tournament favourites emerged in the early days of the tournament. Counter Attack creator Colin was dumped out of the tournament in the quarter final by the studious Italian, Luigi. Polish shartshooter Konrad gained some notoriety for his special ‘Konrad Korner’ manoeuvres, yet it was Englishman Adam who looked like the player to beat.
And so it proved – Adam’s last-gasp equaliser against Luigi in the semi-final propelled him to a penalty shoot-out victory (yes, even though he is definitely English) that took him into the final against Konrad. The final was played on Sunday night and it was the first ever to be streamed live on the Counter Attack Twitch channel. Locked in a tight match at 2-2, Adam won a corner as the game moved deep into injury time. The ball to the back post was headed home by the Dane, Petersen, who send the crowd wild! 3-2 to Adam in the World Cup Final!
Congratulations to Adam – the World Champion – and commiserations to Konrad. A big thanks to the tournament organisers and Twitch streamers, and to all of the people who took part!
