I was just about to post about this – my 10 year old has been infuriating me at free kicks by doing exactly this. I send my CBs up for a heading duel, he just moves his 6 players up the pitch leaving everyone offside. :o) I’ve been able to play short and then try to outrun him but it does feel like there’s going to be no variety to free kicks!
I’m thinking through whether (in his specific case!) staggering would prevent him from still using all his moves to squeeze out… potentially not, knowing what he’s like, but at least as the attacker I can then better play around it. I’ll have to try the different staggered approaches next time we’re playing.
+1 for the chip from me! I feel like defender deflection opportunity would have to be right in front – maybe the adjacent hexes directly in front of the striker only?
Thanks both! So as I understand, the tackle has to be immediate, but if not successful it doesn’t end the defending team’s movement phase, and moving away from the failed tackler can’t also trigger a steal in the same phase. Thanks for clearing that up! (there’s more of these to come, I’m afraid, but loving the game so far!)
